Wishing You a Very Happy Birthday ..
The truth about Jim Dix and Reptile Rescue inc.
I am writing this because of a series of disturbing events including conspiracy, cover up, and
neglect by Jim Dix, founder of the Reptile rescue inc., in West Valley, Utah. I started volunteering for Mr.
Dix in late June and volunteered for about two and a half months when I reported him to West Valley
animal control for neglect, due to the fact that I was unable to bear anymore of what I had seen while
working with him. My intentions were simply to make Jim Dix aware of the situation, since he was not
responding to verbal concerns voiced by the volunteers. I planned to keep working for Mr. Dix but am
no longer wanted due to the fact that West Valley animal control notified Mr. Dix of that fact that I am
the person who turned him in. During my time with Jim I know of at least seven animals that have died
due to negligence, and have witnessed gross negligence in the form of denial of food, denial of water,
denial of veterinary care, and bad husbandry techniques.
I started volunteering for Jim Dix in late June; my first observations of the animals in his care
were that many of them were in a deteriorating condition either from lack of food or illness. I logically
surmised that this was because of previous conditions. I later discovered that many of the animals were
not this way when they came to the rescue and developed these conditions while at the rescue. Mr.
Dix’s feeding and watering habits are substandard as is his husbandry technique.
While at the rescue I observed animals having to go more than a week without water and in
particular case found a turtle that had passed away with its head in a dry watering dish. In that very
same cage on the same day, I also found a turtle that had been dead long enough for decomposition to
have eaten most of the tissue away from the animal. I’ve observed monitor lizards going as much as
three weeks without food being offered then being power fed to be kept alive. I’ve observed snakes go
as long as a month and a half without being offered food, including a set of carpet pythons that were
not offered food for at least two months.
When animals develop a sickness they are not separated, taken to the vet, and still used for
shows or events. I have observed at least two pythons that have developed upper respiratory infections
that have not only been denied vet care, but also maintained in the same cage as healthy animals and
taken to shows, during the Utah County fair a python with an upper respiratory infection was used for
the display and kept overnight with temperatures as low as sixty degrees; as a result that animal died
shortly after. At the same fair I witnessed the death of five baby gopher snakes and a baby rattle snake
due to the denial of water for three days in hot weather while being kept in clear plastic containers.
The deaths at the County fair were enough for me to decide that Jim Dix needed to be reported
to some sort of authoritative body. I called the West Valley animal control and opened a case with a
supervisor named: Nathan Beckstead, at the time I opened the case in notified Nathan that I wanted my
name to be kept completely confidential and was assured it would be illegal for Mr. Dix to be informed I
had called. I received a call from James Dix the next day and he told me “somebody turned me in, an
officer came out and chatted with me and told me enough information that I can narrow it down to a
few people,” Mr. dix also threatened me by saying “I know a lot of people, I’ve found who’s turned me
in before I can do it again.” I later called Mr. Beckstead and asked him about this and was told “a lot of
people make it easy to tell who’s turned in others you seem like one of those people.” A couple days
later I called Jim and was told “I drove to West Valley animal control and they told me you turned me
in.” Since then I have not worked for Jim.
These are disturbing events and so far I have been met with deaf ears when trying to inform
others of these invents. I am doing everything in my power to make people aware that this is going on;
for I fear that if left unchecked that they will continue and innocent animals will suffer in the process.
if you are agains the abuse and neglect of animals feel free to call Jim dix and let him know how you feel
