Il. state senator Dick Durbin's response to me regarding S373!
Posted On 02/02/2010 21:46:03 by dizzl
This really sucks!! Dear Mr. Woodruff: Thank you for contacting me regarding efforts to list pythons as injurious wildlife under the Lacey Act. I appreciate hearing from you, and I understand your concerns about the potential impact of this listing on pet owners and hobbyists. The introduction of nonnative, invasive species to the United States is cause for serious concerns. These species can have a negative impact on our environment, our economy, and human and animal health. Senator Nelson of Florida has introduced legislation (S. 373) that would list nine species of pythons as injurious wildlife under the Lacey Act. He argues that, as a nonnative species, pythons have the potential to cause serious harm to Florida's ecosystems, in particular the Everglades. Pythons have been found throughout Florida, and several species pose a high risk due to their ability to adapt to new environments, their lack of natural predators, and their rapid reproduction rate. If passed, S. 373 would prohibit these species of pythons from being imported into the United States and from being transferred between states. The Senate Environment and Public Works Committee has approved S. 373, and the measure now awaits further action by the full Senate. In addition, the Interior Department announced recently that the Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) will propose to list the same nine species of pythons as injurious wildlife under the Lacey Act. The FWS is expected to issue its proposed rule for the listing in February. The proposed rule would then be subject to a 60 day public comment period. Many pet owners and hobbyists have expressed concerns about the possible effect that S. 373 and the FWS proposed rule could have on the pet trade industry. Supporters of the bill note that listing these species of pythons under the Lacey Act would not prohibit domestic breeding or prohibit individuals from selling pythons within their own state. I will keep your concerns in mind as the Senate further considers this issue. Thank you again for your message. Please feel free to keep in touch. Sincerely, Richard J. Durbin United States Senator

As a Democrat myself I honestly don't think that it matters what side of the fence people lie. It all has to do with ignorance. Ignorance of the politicians who proposed the bill and their reasons for doing so along with ignorance of a few reptile owners who were cruel and too lazy to properly take care of their pets. On top of that hurricane Andrew had allot to do with the reason that so many of these large constrictors were released into the wild and attempting to stop the sale and trade of large constrictors will in my opinion will have zero impact on the situation. The python is now a native species in the Florida everglades just like alligators and does not pose any more of a threat then alligators do on the environment or it's inhabitants.  If these politicians want to pass a law then they should require licenses for people who want to own these large constrictors as well as venomous snakes and let the snake industry police itself. If people were required to get licenses and permits the same way as we make them do so to drive a car or own a gun in would severly cut down on the amount of owners who want to go out and purchase these snakes when they are babies only to realize how much effort and money it will cost them later on. I wish S373 would just go away so the reptile industry can finally breath a sigh of relief.

just another reason why this country is making a swift change to the "right" and the dems will be all but extinct in the government by 2013. you cant legislate common sense! this legislation would just jack up the already ridiculous unemployment rate.

You need to tell him that we live in a mobile society and that people sometimes have to move between states for their jobs. You need to remind him that those in the armed services are required to move fairly often. If people have to give up their pets when they move, they are unlikely to purchase those animals as pets. If they won't purchase those animals as pets, then breeders won't be able to sell them. This legislation would destroy the industry.

You need to tell him that the proponents of this bill are simply not telling the truth. Whether they are lying or just confused is unknown, but these animals do not pose a great danger in terms of displacing native populations.

I did, I not only sent him a letter pre-writen by USARK, I wrote one my self! He's a damn democrat!! Every republican that I had correspondence with dissagrees with S373!! I just dont get it. The dems are out to ruin this country I tell ya'!
