BEHIND THE SCENES: Rodent Breeding Operation
Before selling the business, I thought I'd take you all behind the scenes for a glimpse of what a large-scale rodent breeding operation looks like. You can see there's two 40' long cargo shipping containers, fully insulated, with water and electricity. There's also a 2-story barn off to the left where the mice are, but I just take you into one rat bin.

I ran this operation for a little over two years, and though it was profitable, it was a whole lot of work! At one point, I had approx. 5,000 mouse breeders and about 800 rat breeders, producing thousands of rats/mice every month!

Cleaning and feeding were one thing (many hours of relentless labor), but counting and sorting hundreds of rodents for orders every week was brutal (VERY time-consuming). And of course dealing with the dreaded occasional flood was never fun. All bins were connected to a main line (avoiding having to fill buckets), so when a line was chewed (escapee), and it wasn't caught in time, it was a big mess to clean. Luckily, this didn't happen too often.

All in all, I enjoyed the experience. Sometimes I even miss it! Go figure.
